Manesh Patel

Manesh R. Patel, MD is Chief of the Division of Cardiology, Chief of the Division of Pharmacology, and Co-Director of the Duke Heart Center. Dr. Patel previously served as the cardiology section leader in Interventional Cardiology and as the Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories for the Duke University Health System. His clinical and research interests include vascular care including angiography, peripheral angiography, and percutaneous intervention. His research has included landmark clinical trials involving patients with vascular disease and in cardiac imaging. His integration of these efforts in teaching and research at Duke was recognized in 2010 when he received the prestigious Duke Cardiology Fellowship Mentorship Award. In 2013, he received the Robert M. Califf Research Award. Currently he is focused on integrating and developing systems towards a Learning Heart Center aimed as studying, measuring, and delivering improved patient-centered care across the health system. Dr. Patel has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in high impact journals, several reviews, and over 20 editorials. Most notably, his research is seminal in the improved care for patients undergoing vascular care, diagnostic coronary testing, and finally anticoagulation with Atrial Fibrillation. He has been noted to be in the top 1% of cited researcher by Clarivate Analytics. His articles in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine have garnered national attention from scientific and lay press. In 2020, he was named the Distinguished Richard S. Stack Professor. Dr. Patel received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 1997. He completed his residency at Duke in 2000, followed by fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Duke University and a clinical research fellowship at the Duke Clinical Research Institute.
